TIA runway too weak for wide body operation to be strengthened

Chinese company China National Aero Technology International Engineering Corporation has won the bid for rehabilitating the runway of sole international airport of Nepal Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).

The company and civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) will sign the contract in a date between Dashain and Tihar and the rehabilitation work of 3,050 meter runway work will commence from February or March of 2019.

The project is expected to take around 5 months to complete and the most critical 1600 meter length part at southern side by June. The airport is set to be closed for 10 hours daily while the rehabilitation project carries on.

The airport runway rehabilitation project was started as the runway suffered frequent cracks during various course of time due to extreme pressure over the runway. The authorities also stated wide-body operating airlines to decrease their flight as CAAN study in 2014 reviled that the runway of TIA is not strong to operate wide-body aircrafts.

CAAN selected the China National Aero Technology International Engineering Corporation as it bid lowest amount than other competitors namely China Harbor Engineering, Beijing Changdao Municipal Engineering Group from China and one Nepal- Chinese venture that consist China Railway No 5 Engineering Group and Swachchhanda Nirman Sewa of China and Nepal respectively.

CAAN stated that they issued notice to approve the bid of the company and invited the lowest bidder company to sign the runway and taxiway rehabilitation project contract of Rs. 3.55 billion.
