Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta international airport

Initially, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta international airport was built on The Atlanta Speedway with a rent-free five-year lease. Mayor Walter Sims signed this lease on 16 April 1925, intending to develop an airfield. However, the airfield named “Candler Field” after the former owner of the property Asa Candler as a part of the agreement.  Asa Candler had been a former mayor of the Atlanta city and was a Coca-Cola tycoon. Moreover, on 15 September 1926, this was finally completed as the airfield’s first historic flight. It was done by a Mail Plane of Florida Airways, which flew in from Jacksonville, Florida. Soon after, the airfield began gaining reputation, and in May of 1928, Pitcairn Aviation began its services in the Candler field. Following it, Delta Air service also started its service in the airfield by June of 1930. Moreover, as time passed, these two airlines were renamed Eastern Airlines and Delta Airlines. Furthermore, they started using the airfield as their primary hub in the United States.

By the late 1930s, because of its prestige and rapid expansion, the airport was the third busiest airport in the USA. Furthermore, the Candler field opened its first Air traffic control tower in 1939 to regulate the growing air traffic. Nevertheless, the Candler field was declared as a military airfield by the U.S. government in October of 1940. A training facility was opened in the Candler Field and named as the Atlanta Army Airfield. It was operated by a joint force of the Air Force of the United States and the Candler Field. The airfield was used for servicing different types of combat planes. Throughout World War 2, the airport saw an increase in the size and the number of air traffic with 1,700 record numbers of flights daily. The Atlanta Army airfield was closed after the end of World War 2.

The airfield saw many changes in its name throughout the years. The airport’s name was changed from “Candler Field” and renamed as Atlanta Municipal airport in 1942. However, on 28 February 1971, the Atlanta Municipal Airport was renamed the William B. Hartsfield Atlanta Airport. It was in honor of the former mayor of Atlanta city, William B. Hartsfield. This was later changed to William B. Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport. It was due to the fast growth and the recognition the airport got for its international services. William B. Hartsfield International Airport was again renamed on 20 October 2003 after the former mayor of Atlanta, Maynard Jackson. It was rechristened as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Currently, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport serves as an international airport for Atlanta, Georgia. The city of Atlanta owns the airport and is maintained by the Department of Aviation of Atlanta.

For international travelers, the International Terminal Shuttle provides free shuttle services to and from the Rental Car Center. This service runs every 15 minutes.
