The Government of Nepal has announced to initiate the construction of Nijgadh International Airport, the national pride project from upcoming fiscal year as budget allocation has been made.
Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada presented the budget for this fiscal year yesterday in which he said that the preliminary preparation of Nijgadh Airport project would start from next fiscal year.
The ministry had previously announced to start the construction of the mega airport project by this year however, it could not happen as expected.
Currently, Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) is only the international airport operating in Nepal while other international airport projects: Pokhara Regional International Airport, Gautam Buddha International project are going on.
The Nijgadh International Airport project has been planned as a game changer for Nepali aviation. It is termed as a mega airport project.
A Korean Company named LMW was given the responsibility to prepare the Detailed Probability Report of the airport. The government has already received report from the Korean company.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has already conducted Environment Impact Assessment whereas the 55 percent of the compensation distribution for the land owners has been accomplished.
It has already been 24 years since the government came up with a plan to build the Nijgadh International Airport as an international hub.
There is a plan to develop the hub as an air transit for 22 neighboring countries with around 15 million air passengers. CAAN claims that the project can be completed within the time-frame but almost two-and-a-half decades have gone by and the project is still struggling to complete even preliminary works.
