The government of Nepal on Sunday appointed a new Executive Chairman for Nepal Airlines Corporation following the controversies developed in the recent purchase of two widebody A330 aircraft.
Former Managing Director Madan Kharel is appointed as new Executive Chairman by Cabinet meeting on late Sunday as per the regulations of the national flag carrier.
As per the act, the Executive Chairman holds the right and responsibilities of the Managing Director. Sugat Ratna Kansakar, MD of NAC will no longer have the command over the corporation, however, he has vowed not to resign and stay as CEO with no executive power for the rest of his tenure.
Kharel was appointed to the post of NAC’s managing director in December 2012. The corporation bought new Airbus A320 in his tenure but he submitted resignation letter on March 15, 2015.
Kanskar in his official account tweeted, “An interesting twist in NAC management- former Managing Director Madan Kharel is appointed by Cabinet meeting of Sunday 16th Sept as Executive Chairman. But I have decided not to resign, and stay back as “CEO with no executive power”! I know there will be lots of eyebrows raised!”
The national flag carrier frequently gets involved in the controversies due to irregularities suspected in the purchase of new aircraft, repetitive grounding of aircraft, poor management strategy, inability to conduct an efficient flight operation and many more.
