Development project of Rajbiraj Airport delays further

Construction project of Rajbiraj Airport in Saptari has not been completed at given time frame. Black-topping of Runway, construction of highly equipped and facilitated control tower and terminal building was contracted on month of Kartik in 2073 but Contractor Company has added contractual extension till end of Chaitra.

According to project head for Rajbiraj Airport of Civil Aviation Authority Ram Iqbal Mahato, the blacktopping of 1500 meter of runway, taxi-way, apron and turning point was contracted at 30.3 million with Raman, Kancharam, Dev and Sayeer JV Company. The main reason of delay is due to involvement of company in other airport project. While flood, festivals and election has also affected the work.

The runway blacktopping has not started yet. The work of base and sub-base for runway has been completed and blacktopping at upper layer is only left and according to Mahato, it is due to start from coming Wednesday and work accordingly to complete it within a month. He also aims to complete the construction of Tower and Terminal building within 2 months in order to fly an aircraft.

The previous base construction was completed up to 1500m but due to flood, the completed constructions were disrupted.

The airport was closed just in a few days after its inaugural by then minister Ganesh Man Singh in 2016 BS. Due to rough terrain and lack of infrastructure, it was transformed in pasture land. After the contentious pressure from locals, the project was contracted last year.

After the complete renovation, the Rajbiraj Airport will be capable of accommodating bigger aircraft like ATR. The rumors have been arising that the Rajbiraj Airport could be converted into a flight training school or a maintenance point for the aircraft.
