The sole international airport of the country, Tribhuvan international Airport (TIA) which has been undergoing runway renovation work since April 1 has completed renovating around 650 meter of runway with a month.
The only international airport of the country is being closed every day between 10 PM to 8 AM starting from 1st April for the runway renovation. The runway of 3050 meter has been undergoing renovation work for a month now.
The runway of TIA constructed in 1975, is being fully upgraded for the first time.
China National Aero Technology International Engineering Corporation, Chinese Company has been in charge of runway rehabilitation project and the agreement was signed on November 5, 2018 at cost of around NRs. 3.75 billion.
Though the rehabilitation project was initiated on time, the project was hindered due to unfavorable weather condition. However, the disruption has not been serious issue stated one of the project official.
Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal CAAN Director General Sanjeev Gautam stated that the project has been proceeding in close surveillance as the airport had to be operated as well as renovated at same time and added that the project will be completed within 3 months as per ongoing progress rate.
The runway is also set to install runway lights at the middle part also. Previously, the runway lights were installed at sides only and installation of lights in middle will help in operation stated project official.
The airport will undergo taxiway renovation after completion of runway project. The taxiway project is set to be initiated only after monsoon.
