Air India Express Boeing 737 registered as VT-AXH crashed at Kozhikode Calicut International Airport (CCJ) with 191 aboard. The aircraft was inbound to Kozhikode from Dubai as a Vande Bharat mission to repatriate the Indian citizens. Fire tenders and ambulances rushed out to the spot.
When the incident occurred the Air India Express flight was just about to land. The aircraft separated into several pieces after overshooting the runway. The incident took place at around 7:38 pm despite very heavy rainfall intensities. There were 191 passengers on board the flight including crew members.
The airport Kozhikkode is a tabletop airport such as the one in Mangaluru. A provincial MLA TV Ibrahim said several passengers were hospitalized with injuries and fortunately the plane didn’t catch flames.
The Air India Express aircraft reportedly plunged into a gorge 30 feet deep, while landing in Kozhikode Airport.
As confirmed by local media, the aircraft’s pilot died while the co-pilot is being seriously injured. The plane skipped onto the nearby road from the runway when it landed during heavy rainfall, media reports claim.
According to the Aljazeera, two people were confirmed dead and 35 were injured reported by the area superintendent of police, Abdul Karim.
