United Airlines adding flights to Alabama aiming at football fans

United Airlines has announced they will be adding additional routes on gameday weekends this September through November.

United is adding 74 extra flights, including 52 new direct flights, to give fans the best chance to see their adversary play at home. To satisfy an anticipated increase in demand from fans who want to see their favorite teams live this season.

“Nothing draws people together like the chance to root for their favorite teams,” said Ankit Gupta, United’s vice president of domestic network planning. “This season, United will offer more direct flights we’ve ever added before, allowing our customers to reconnect with the teams, tailgates, and touchdowns they may have missed last season.”

Passengers will be able to enjoy United’s redesigned customer experience onboard, which includes the ability to buy snacks and drinks in advance via the airline’s app. Passengers will not be charged any change fees if they are unable to travel at the last minute. United Airlines has announced a new flight schedule for college football fans traveling to away games around the country. This year, the airline will offer three times as many direct flights to college cities as it did last year, and several are planned from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

In September, United will begin flying from Austin, Texas, to Bentonville, Arizona, to promote the University of Texas-Arkansas football game. A new flight from Lincoln, Nebraska, to Lansing, Michigan, will be available to witness the University of Nebraska play Michigan State University. On Sept. 18, two flights will depart Birmingham for University Park Airport in State College, Penn. Two flights will return the following day.

Similarly, In October, there will be additional college football flights for which the airline has come up with new services on October 8, 9, and 10 from State College, Pennsylvania to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Birmingham, Alabama to College Station, Texas, and Syracuse, New York to Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina. The October additions also include new routes from Los Angeles to South Bend, Indiana, and Raleigh, North Carolina, to South Bend, Indiana.

Finally, in November, the airline will fly supporters from Baton Rouge to Birmingham, Alabama, to watch Louisiana State University play at the University of Alabama on Nov. 6. From South Bend, Indiana, to San Francisco, California, to watch the University of Notre Dame play Stanford University.

United will add 16 additional direct flights between Green Bay, Wisconsin, and New Orleans, Louisiana, to watch two of the best offenses square off in the Big Easy on Sept. 12.

United began preparing for the return of air travel more than a year ago, keeping strong cooperation between its network planning teams and the airline’s operating units to tailor its flying schedule to demand.
