Facing ongoing travel problems related to the Covid-19 pandemic, Southwest Airlines is ratcheting up operations at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport.
The airline also confirmed that it would begin a new seasonal nonstop flight to fit holiday travel between Louisville to Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers, Florida, late this year.
As per a press statement from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, the Fort Myers service will be operated on prime public holidays during the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s holidays. It is expected to begin on Monday, Nov. 23, and run through early January, stated Natalie Chaudoin, the Louisville Regional Airport Authority’s public relations officer.
Chaudoin said that this flight would be provided on a versatile instead of a fixed timetable preparing for certain busier travel days so that those who wish to take advantage of the path can check the availability of Southwest flight schedules.
Southwest has also modified the date to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for a newly scheduled nonstop flight. The flight has been scheduled to begin six weeks earlier than previously planned, the release stated, on Wednesday, Nov. 4. On either a Boeing 737 aircraft with either 143 or 175 seats, the direct flight will fly twice daily out of SDF.
“For Louisville, this is wonderful news and an encouraging indication that the airports start to see solid growth from Southwest,” said Dan Mann, executive director of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority, in the statement. In just time for holiday travel, the announcement of two new airline routes refers to the intensity of our business. We admire the continued commitment made by Southwest at SDF, particularly as the tourism industry struggles to maneuver our way through a global health crisis.
The declaration is a shot of good news for Covid-19’s embattled tourism industry.
