Lamidada airport blacktopping completed; Summit Air test flight successful

Runway blacktopping at Lamidada airport in Khotang has been completed after nearly 2 and a half years.

Summit Air has successfully completed a test flight at the airport on Tuesday.

The airport runway blacktopping project was undertaken by YNS, SAP and Surya construction PVT. Ltd. and the project cost were nearly 64 million rupees.

The airport is a second busiest airport in the area after Lukla airport and now the airport will be able to operate in various weather condition.

Local representative during the occasion of successful test flight by Summit Air welcomed the airlines’ technicians and crews and vowed to make favorable arrangement to make daily operation of the airport. He also urged private airlines to operate flights at the airport.

The airport runway is around 520 meters long and 20 meters wide and can accommodate Twin-otter aircraft.

Lack of good roads and closure of the airport had been problematic to locals and people were compelled to make helicopter charter at a very expensive cost to transfer ill and sick peoples. Now the problem is going to be minimized.

Lamindanda airport which operated since 2029 is the oldest airport of Khotang district and has been the best transport medium for peoples of Khotang.

Previously, Nepal Airlines and Tara Air operated scheduled flights to Lamidanda from Kathmandu and Biratnagar and later helicopter operators had been making a night stop at the airport.
