Tourism Minister Rabindra Adhikari inspected the runway of country’s sole international airport Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) yesterday.
The rehabilitation of runway of the airport is going to be initiated from April 1st 2019 (Chaitra 18). The airport will undergo blacktopping work and minister Adhikari made the onsite inspection today at the construction site.
Minister Adhikari made the visit to reassure any requirement for the rehabilitation of the runway. The project is set to end by June 2019 (Jestha 2076).
The airport will remain closed from 10 pm to 8 am in the morning halting all the flight operations for accommodating the runway extension project.
The runway is set to be upgraded for first time since the runway of the airport was constructed in 1975.
In the first phase, the airport 3000m runway will be blacktopped for which the work will be conducted for 10 hours a day.
China National Aero Technology International Engineering Corporation, Chinese Company held charge of the runway rehabilitation project of TIA. The agreement was signed on November 5, 2018.
The project will be in cost of Nrs. 3.75 Billion which will include rehabilitation of runway and taxiway of the airport. After completing the runway work, the work of ‘Parking bay’ will also be started.
