New committee formed to probe wide-body scam

A new high level investigation committee has been formed by government to investigate on stated irregularities found during procurement of 2 wide-body Airbus 330 aircrafts by national flag carrier Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC).

The new committee formed after meeting of council of ministers on Thursday include former chef judge Govinda Prasad Parajuli as chairman including Chartered accountant Madan Sharma and former deputy attorney general Narendra Prasad Pathak as members.

The new committee was formed day after sub-committee of parliaments Public Account Committee (PAC) indicated involvement of top officials and ministers including current Tourism Minister Rabindra Adhikari in the scam and recommended to take action against those involved.

The committee is directed to provide the report within 45 days by government’s spokesperson as well as communication and technology mister Gokul Parsad Baskota.

According to source of PAC, NAC calculated the price based on annual cost increments since eight years ago when NAC had invited tender bids for narrow-body planes. PAC had concluded the fraud of Rs 4.35 billion in the wide-body aircraft purchase.

PAC indicated involvement of Tourism minister along with 2 former minister as well as Managing Director of the corporation Sugat Ratna Kansakar along with 29 other high level officials.
The wide-body scam emerged as soon as the aircraft entered into the country and the PAC was established to investigate on the scam.
