The 5 member sub-committee established under former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has directed to stop construction of Nagidanda airport at Kavre for time being. Federal parliament of Nepal’s International relation committee had established sub-committee under the Ex- Prime Minister of Nepal, Madhav Kumar Nepal to study about all the airports of the country.
Mr. Nepal stated that currently all should focus on National Pride projects like Nijgadh International Airport, Bhairahawa and Pokhara regional international airport rather than in making new small airports. He also stated that it will lead to misuse of the money.
Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) started the project with the aim to complete it within 5 years and has provided Nrs 250 million from this fiscal year to Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) for land acquisition. CAAN has also forwarded process for Environment Impact Assessment (EIA).
The construction of the new domestic airport at Nagidanda is started with an aim to minimize air traffic of the only international airport of country Tribhuvan International airport (TIA). However, the airport will not be able to handle big aircraft like Bombardier CRJ’s, MA-60, and Beechcraft, ATR, Jetstream and will only be able to handle STOL aircraft like Twin-Otter, Dornier, Y-12 e and LET.
