Previously, the project faced some disturbances as locals had protested against the authority by setting up tents in runway site for the delay in the distribution of compensation for the land acquisition process. Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) released 2 billion rupees in projects account to be distributed to landowners then the protest was suspended by the locals.

Likewise, International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group is likely to be appointed as the transaction advisory service provider by the Nepal government for under construction Gautam Buddha International Airport (GBIA) of Bhairahawa.

IFC has presented a proposal conveying interest to support in preparing tender documents, publishing a notice on the related tender and go for appropriate private party to operate the airport to the government for the construction project of Bhairahawa airport.
