“The Formulation of Landing and Take-Off Performance Calculation Tool for The Domestic Aircraft in Nepal”
A project titled “The Formulation of Landing and Take-Off Performance Calculation Tool for The Domestic Aircraft in Nepal” was carried out. The landing and take-off performance calculation tool is a part of an on going project that intends provide a means for optimization of airports and flight routes in Nepal. The current tool, which represents the first phase of the project, was presented recently at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IOE (Pulchowk), under the review of a panel of aircraft-operation experts.
The tool uses mathematical modelling of aircraft flight dynamics, in contrast to manufacturer provided performance estimations in POH, provides arbitrary performance data instantaneously. The performance data are initially validated by the manufacturer’s data, and the calculations are as precise as allowed by the aerodynamic parameters (non-dimensional thrust, lift and drag coefficients, etc.) provided for any aircraft.
In particular, the current tool can allow for instantaneously testing viability of any aircraft (for given weight, single-engine operation, climb gradient etc.) at any any airport, and provides detailed plots for variation of any performance parameter in terms of any operational parameter. Hence, any fictional (planned) airport can be tested for the range of aircraft that can operate from it and the preliminary runway/geographical characteristics for optimized operation can be obtained.
